Recognisably Safe
In a corrupt world, where we feel we cannot trust people, it is a relief to meet someone who seems to be safe. Jesus had just described the religious leaders of the time as sheep-stealers (John 10:1). They were supposed to be the 'watchmen' of Israel, but instead had persecuted the prophets and would shortly send Him to the cross (Acts 7:51-52). So, He contrasted their behaviour with His own, by describing the relationship a shepherd has with casual labouring farm hands and the animals.
A true shepherd has an inner passion for the sheep which is well known by the farm workers and by the sheep themselves. Their voice is unmistakable, so much so that when the sheep hear they will follow them, because they trust their shepherd. There is no need to drive them from behind (like today's Western shepherds who use sheep dogs); the shepherd goes ahead of them and leads them (Isaiah 40:11). They identify the shepherd by the voice they have become accustomed to hearing … and the sheep follow. They will not follow other people; their voices do not sound right - alarming the sheep who should run away from imposters. That is how it is with those people who believe in Jesus (John 10:16).
Although it is difficult to describe, the 'voice' of Jesus is recognisable and compelling to those who follow Him; and to all who are hungry to know God. John Newton, the 18th Century former slave-ship captain, knew that voice. He wrote many hymns including:
How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds,
In a believer's ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.
That continues to be the testimony of those who are following Jesus as their shepherd. Is it true for you? If Jesus means everything to you, rejoice. And all who know His voice have the responsibility to identify competing voices which want to drag your heart from God’s … and run from them (1 Timothy 6:6-11). Give them no time or space, no opportunity to twist their lies into your heart. But if many voices have attracted your attention and Jesus has no priority in your life, then please watch the presentation at www.crosscheck.org.uk and realise that He is calling you.
