Our eyes are most important.  They receive information which enables us to control the rest of our body.  For instance, when we are crossing a road, seeing traffic coming towards us will stimulate a set of responses to avoid the danger; and seeing loved ones will prepare us to serve them.  Eyes gather information to shine into our mind, soul and spirit.

Jesus speaks of spiritual understanding as 'eyes' which receive truth and enable us to make decisions about righteous and loving behaviour.  If people are able to 'see' what is true then they can react to keep spiritually safe, be productive and be able to change unholy and destructive behaviour patterns.  But those who are 'blind' to the truth, even though they may be religious, will stumble through life, hurting others and being hurt as they make a mess of their lives.

Jesus said He is the Light of the world (John 8:12).  Everybody could see that Jesus did miracles and taught in a wonderful way. But they needed to see beyond what He did to see who He was, if they were to believe in Him.  As in any relationship, we cannot trust somebody else unless we know that they are qualified, skilled, competent, and honest; having our best interests at heart.  Without that information we cannot put our faith in them.  Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is based on the knowledge that He is the Son of God, the Lamb of God, and the Way to God.  When the disciples saw the truth about Jesus, they found that their faith enlightened every part of their personality.  Jesus transformed their decision making, and their reactions to the dark world in which they lived, because He became their light.

That is why Jesus is such good news!  He is everything we need.  As well as having brought believers into a relationship with God through His atoning sacrifice, He continues to intercede for us as our advocate (1 John 2:1).  He loves us and pours His Holy Spirit upon us to empower us to live His life in our little corner of the world (Acts 1:8).  Indeed, His transforming power is so great that believers also become lights in the world (Matthew 5:14, Philippians 2:15) shining truth, love and righteousness - just like Jesus.  Think of today as His opportunity to enlighten you with His transforming Word, empower you by His Spirit and enable you to be a 'Jesus-light' in your home, work, community, church and wherever you go.
