Many people, who used to follow Jesus, had gone away from Him (John 6:66).  They had wanted Him to fulfil their agenda for religious, social and political change, but Jesus refused to play their game or be patronised by them.  So, He asked the Twelve disciples if they also wanted to leave Him.  It was a test of their faith as well as their personal loyalty.  If He was not going to be the political revolutionary that some wanted, were they willing to continue with Him in His mission of salvation?

Peter's response was heartfelt - 'who else is there like you?'  Indeed, Jesus was unique in His sinless nature and everything He said matched His character.  More than that, the words He spoke were lifegiving.  He spoke of Father God and heaven with intimate personal experience (John 3:13); and it dawned on the Twelve that He must be the Messiah (Hebrew word), the Christ (Greek word).  

Living with Jesus every day, the disciples could see that He was far more than a good man.  Peter’s conclusion was that Jesus was the ‘Holy One of God’.  The demons knew that very well (Mark 1:24), because they had most to lose (Revelation 20:10): but now the disciples realised that they had everything to gain if they stayed with Jesus – including Judas Iscariot who thought he could make money out of Jesus (Matthew 26:14-16).

For us, staying with Jesus is a decision based on who we believe Jesus is.  If He is not God in a human body, then He cannot be our life-giver.  But as He is Divine, His words will define what is true, and He has the power to fulfil all His wonderful promises and power to meet all our needs.  Nobody else is like that!  So why are we so easily seduced by loud but hollow voices?  Why are we not satisfied by Jesus alone?  Satan is cunning.  If he cannot drag us out of God's kingdom, and he cannot (John 10:28-30), he will tempt us to compromise ourselves with wealth or fame or lust or power - telling us that Jesus is good but not enough!  What blasphemy!  It is evil from Satan to suggest such a lie, and wicked of us to believe it.  So, examine your heart: what or who provides your satisfaction?  If Jesus has been displaced from His throne, then repent; rid yourself of idols and decide to worship the Lord with all your heart and mind and soul and strength.
